An army trooper was detained on Monday for alleged misbehaving with a school girl in north Kashmir's Wanigam village. The incident comes close on the heels of allegations of abduction and gang rape of a woman against two soldiers in south Kashmir's Manzgam village last week.According to a police spokesman, the army trooper misbehaved with the school girl while she was on her way to her school in Wanigam village. The incident led to protests in the area by locals.

Separatist outfits in Kashmir have reacted strongly to the arrest of Ghulam Nabi Fai, the executive director of the Kashmir American Council based in Washington, by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Terming the arrest of Dr Fai as "unjustified", hard-line separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani said, "The arrest has been made at the behest of the government of India. It is the result of a deep rooted conspiracy to weaken the ongoing movement in Kashmir."

Five militants and an army trooper were killed and four others wounded in an encounter in north Kashmir's Kupwara district. The gunfight erupted early on Friday after troops of counter insurgency Rashtriya Rifles and the police jointly surrounded a house, acting on a specific tip-off about the presence of a group of militant commanders inside it. "The operation is over. We have recovered the bodies of the militants," said a spokesperson.
